[su_quote cite=”Matt Wills”]Ed Sheeran did a lot. Just in his work rate. I was homeless at one point same as he was, and his music started to rise whilst I was homeless and I just kinda looked and thought he can do it so why cant I. He’s a real inspiration that man.[/su_quote]

-What inspired the lyrics found in “Wallflower”?
Its all about a girl I dated who was a dancer, who every time we went anywhere would be so quiet and shy around me but if i wasn’t there she would be going crazy, dancing on the bar and loving life. We ended up having an argument and I said why do you always act like a wallflower. I went to the studio that night and explained to my producer about the argument  and he just played a beat and I  just started singing “darlin’ you dance like a wallflower” like an idiot and it stuck.

-What do you think sets British singer/songwriters apart from the rest?
Well in my case I’m not anything but me. I say what I want and stand up for what I really feel about.

-What does feel to know that artists like Halsey, Skrillex, and my favorite band The Kooks are fans of you?
I’ve always looked up to all three of them as artists and at some point your favourite artists can become your peers and when they say that they appreciate your music it means a lot. Especially as I learnt to write and play music by learning the Kooks songs to have Luke apprecite what I’m making is an absolute blessing and compliment. To be fair the fact they know I’m alive is pretty dope.

-Name a few artists that inspired and motivated you? How? Why?
Ed Sheeran did a lot. Just in his work rate. I was homeless at one point same as he was, and his music started to rise whilst I was homeless and I just kinda looked and thought he can do it so why cant I. He’s a real inspiration that man.

-Before a gig do you have some sort of special ritual or something you must do?
For me I just chain smoke and listen to lots of grime and UK hip-hop with my band to get me hyped. I just wanna jump on stage ready to go.

-Before a gig do you have some sort of special ritual or something you must do?
For me I just chain smoke and listen to lots of grime and UK hip-hop with my band to get me hyped. I just wanna jump on stage ready to go.
So far, the most memorable venue you’ve played in? Why?
Jheeze. I’ve been lucky, super lucky at my point in my career to have played some of the places I have so early on. The real standouts have to be Koko ’cause it was my first big stage. Playing the first arena with Bastille in Europe to 10,000 people is special and getting to play Pompeii with Dan at the end. Also Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston… it’s a small bar but was my first ever headline show of my own and the day after playing there I signed my deal and it started this whole journey so yeah.
-How do you feel about ‘Cigarettes & City Lights’?
I love it, I really do. I’m proud of it. It’s also difficult to listen to for me. Every song is from a specific moment like a diary, so it really hits me on a lot of hard moments over five years in fourteen songs.

-Beside an album that has us all excited, what else can we expect from Matt Wills for whats left of 2017?
I’ve got a few surprises. I’ve written some pop songs that I’m excited to release after my album and I’ve got loads of cool pop ups and things happening over the summer.
-Top 10 Songs that you would recommend in a heartbeat?
Clean Cut Kid – Vitamin C
The Japanese House – their whole catalogue
Tom Walker – Just You and I
Dan Caplen
MAN I’M JUST NAMING ARTISTS I CAN’T CHOOSE TRACKS (This wolf understands the feeling lol)
Kyko
