Technology : Playy App

About the App:
“Playy aims to become the fastest way to create a music video and post it on Playy, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and share as a link, while discovering new music.”
-Via Playy Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/playymedia )

Playy is fun and easy to use, its interface is beautifully designed to grab your attention and make you just want to click on someone and listen to what they shared. It’s like Vine meets Instagram meets SoundCloud and I love that, it takes two of your senses for a ride and you experience something that seems familiar but at the same time it doesn’t. Playy is a great new medium to discover music and the great thing is that it’s gaining the popularity it deserves little by little. And another great thing is that the team behind it is still working on it, improving it, making sure the music that is shared in the app is heard and making sure all forms of artistry is seen and enjoyed (from photography to illustrations -Playy can showcase it).

Don’t just take my word for it, go to their website or to the app store and download it.

The Interview:
1) Can you tell me and the readers something about yourself and your background?
I’m from San Diego and moved to New York in late 2013. I received my Masters in NYU’s Music Business program. I have a background in Film & Media Production as well as Dj’ing & Music production. I’ve always been interested in the intersection of creativity and technology and essentially did/am doing everything I could to pursue this passion.
2) What lead to creating playy?how did the idea come to be?
Playy was created from a simple problem. In late 2013, I realized it seemed like such a pain point to make video content to post to instagram that included cool music. You had to basically use multiple third-party apps or Final Cut to piece something together. I met my Co-Founder Stoyan Vasilev and we immediately dug deeper and realized there was definitely something there.
3) How would you describe playy?
As of this moment, Playy is a mobile which allows fans to record 10-second music videos to a library of tracks uploaded by artists and rights holders. It’s interesting, we’re so early on in our product lifecycle that we’re already talking about how to make the product better, more efficient, and easier. I can’t share exactly what we are going to implement but I can say it’s something we are really excited about. Stay tuned for the next 6 months.
4) What is your ultimate goal with playy?
At the end of the day, we’re all about bridging the gap between creativity and technology. Whether it’s music, video, gifs, still photography, sounds, etc. The ultimate goal is to allow Playy to be a home for all sorts of artists and creators to make really amazing content from start to finish. We’re currently barely scratching the surface.
5) Talking about music, what type of music do you listen to?
I do listen and appreciate all kinds.. but my favorites are Disco & Deep House.. . I’ve always pushed more towards “electronic music.” Since I was about 14 years old.
6) Who are some artists that you have personally discovered on the app and that you would definitely have in your personal playlist?
A few artists that stick out to me personally are Basement Love and Thompson. Basement Love has some really cool slo-house beats and Thompson has a classic house feel. There’s already such a vast majority of music on there, you can really dig.
7) How often do you log in to your account on playy?
Probably too often! I’m always concerned that our server is out and I’m a bit OCD about things so I like to make sure that everything is running smoothly.
8) Any personal tips for discovering music?
One of the great things about Playy is that you can discover music just by watching content and then swipe to the next video/song. It’s a pretty awesome experience and once the visual element gets even more creative, we’re excited to really push this new paradigm of discovering music through video. We believe this is the future.
9) What does the future hold for Marc and Playy?
You know, I wish I had the answer to that! But my personal philosophy is that you make your future and I can tell you that our team is so incredibly passionate about our product and we’re doing nothing but putting our hearts and souls into it. We’re excited to see what happens!
